Top 10: Youngstown’s amount of charter schools
YOUNGSTOWN — Nearly one out of every four public school students in the city was enrolled in a charter school last school year.
The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools said Youngstown had 23 percent of its students in charter schools in 2006-07, ranking the city third in the nation on the Top 10 list of communities with a charter school market share.
There were a dozen public charter schools operating in the city last school year and they enrolled 2,615 city school children, an increase of 12 percent over the previous year’s total of 2,326, according to the Alliance.
During that period, the city school enrollment dropped by more than 4 percent to about 8,200.
Dr. Wendy Webb, Youngstown schools superintendent, said that although the charter school enrollment is growing, that doesn’t mean children attending those schools are getting a better education.
