Volleyball player honored

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — YSU freshman Laurie Shives was named the Horizon League’s volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 15, the league announced on Monday.

Shives played a vital role in YSU’s split last week. She totaled 45 digs in two matches and averaged 5.00 digs per game while lacing three aces last week.

Shives, who has recorded double figures in digs 15 times, collected 23 digs in a four-game win over Wright State and 22 in five-game loss to Butler. She has also tallied at least 20 digs on seven occasions, including five of the last six matches, and owns a career-high of 27 against Butler on Sept. 14.

For the season, Shives leads the Penguins with 297 digs and a 3.67 digs per game average. She ranks ninth in the Horizon League overall but eighth in the League with 4.20 digs per game against Horizon League opponents.

Mooney has rally

YOUNGSTOWN — There will be a football rally at Cardinal Mooney High on Thursday at 1 p.m.

The rally, which will be held in the school’s gymnasium, comes the day before the Ursuline-Mooney game, Friday at YSU’s stadium.

This will be the 53nd meeting between the parochial schools. Mooney leads the series 34-15-3.

Midget AAA Phantoms
win 2nd tournament

BOARDMAN — The Phantom Fireworks Midget Major AAA team went 4-0-1 this weekend, on the way to capturing their second tournament championship of the year at the Buckeye Shoot-Out in Cleveland.

After beating the Mount Lebanon Hornets 11-0 Friday in their opening game, the Phantoms tied the Pittsburgh Predators 1-1 on Saturday.

Back-to-back 3-1 wins set up a rematch against the Predators in Sunday’s championship game.

The Phantoms won the title match, 3-1.

“The first game against Pittsburgh we were a little lackadaisical, and we were just going through the motions,” said Phantoms head coach Joe Dumais.

The line of Andy Cramer, Spencer Jordan and Jordan Sims scored 22 points on the weekend

“It doesn’t matter how much talent you have, you still have got to push it every day, and that’s what they are doing.”

The Phantoms are 19-5-4.

Columbiana Fair

LISBON — The Columbiana County Fall Bash is scheduled for Oct. 27 at the fairgrounds in Lisbon.

The event will feature a Figure 8 small and full-size car race.

There will also be compact and full-size car demolition derbies, a pick-up truck and compact van demolition derby.

Gates open at noon and the show will begin at 5:00 p.m.

All general admission, which includes grandstand seating, will be $6.00 at the gate.

Cooper repeats

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — The Presidents’ Athletic Conference named Westminster College senior Jess Cooper (Laurel High) as its PAC Volleyball Player of the Week for a second straight week.

Cooper, a 5-foot-10 middle hitter, led the Titans to three 3-0 sweeps of PAC opponents, lifting Westminster into sole possession of first place in the conference standings.

She averaged 4.22 kills per game in the three matches, including team-high totals of 16 kills against Grove City and 15 vs. Geneva on Saturday, while adding seven total blocks for the week.

The Titans (14-11, 9-1 PAC) have now won eight straight matches, including 11 of their last 12. They played at Waynesburg tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Swisher picked

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Thiel College freshman forward Chad Swisher (Alliance) was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference soccer Offensive Player of the Week.

Swisher led Thiel to its first victory over a PAC opponent since the Tomcats picked up a 3-2 win over Thomas More College on Oct. 27, 2005 last Monday, recording his first collegiate hat trick in their 4-1 win at Waynesburg University.

On the season Swisher has posted nine goals and four assists.

Ed’s Mistake leads

HUBBARD — Ed’s Mistake of Ed Zitnik, Jack Kechler, Don Kane and Ted Bundy is the current leader of Youngstown 2007 senior team tournament at Bell-Wick Bowl.

Ed’s Mistake’s score is 2,616.

Standing in second with 2,556 is the Mixers team of Jim Ellis, Tom Bobonick, Jim Shopinsky and Mike Yurco.

The Bell-Wick Bowl team of Ron Anchutz, Tim Kornbau, Carl Pasternack and Francis Zitnik is third with 2,536, while fourth-place Two By Two got a 2,516 score from members Dennis Hamm, Martha Denmeade, Nancy Cramer and Carl Cramer.
