$3M for lead abatement

YOUNGSTOWN — Representatives from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will present Mahoning County commissioners with a check for $3 million today for the county’s Lead-Hazard Control Program. The county was one of dozens of state and local communities and organizations awarded money to protect children and families from lead-based paint. The county received the maximum award, which will be used to improve 201 homes. County officials say HUD rated the Mahoning County Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control Program’s application No. 1 in the grant process, and the $3 million brings to more than $18 million the amount of federal funds the county’s Healthy Homes program has secured since 1996.
