Soccer team blanked
YOUNGSTOWN — Amber Kasmer scored two late goals as Wright State defeated the YSU soccer team 3-0.
YSU stayed within one goal of the Raiders for the first 65 minutes in the league match at Stambaugh Stadium.
Jess Rooma scored on a header to give the Raiders a 1-0 advantage at the break. Megan Mattioda assisted Rooma’s goal in the 38th minute.
The Raider improve to 10-3-1 and 3-0-1 in the league while YSU is 1-13-1, 0-4.

Shenango falls
SHENANGO, Pa. — After leads of 3-0 and 9-6, the Shenango High football team lost 36-9 to Sumitt Academy Saturday.
Mark Albert gave Shenango a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and Ryan Tanner scored a 7-yard run to give the Wildcats a 9-6 lead early in the second period.
Summit Academy rush for 177 yards and passed for 178, while holding Shenango to 96 rushing and 64 passing yards.
Howland wins MAC
HOWLAND — The Howland High boys soccer team captured the MAC championship in the last game of the season, beating Poland 2-0.
The game was scoreless at the half.
Nick Giannakos scored first at 36:48 remaining in the second half. He was assist by Eric Albani.
Cameron Francis scored at 22:18, assisted by Matt Zador.
Poland goalie Andrew McElroy had seven saves.
Howland goalie Dan Miller also recorded seven saves.
Howland had an undefeated season, 9-0-7 overall; 7-0-3 in MAC. Poland 8-2-4, 5-1-4 in MAC.
Steel Valley Conf.
picks McCarthy
YOUNGSTOWN — Cardinal Mooney High senior quarterback Dan McCarthy was named the Steel Valley Conf. player of the week for his actions in Friday’s 21-17 win over Akron SVSM.
McCarthy ran for 128 yards and a touchdown and he completed passes for 102 yards and touchdowns covering 62 and 22 yards.
On defense McCarthy accumulated a sack, a fumble recovery and an interception.
Phantoms beat U.S.
Nationals 3-2
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Brent Dexter’s power play goal with just under 12 minutes remaining in regulation was the difference, as the Mahoning Valley Phantoms won 3-2 against the U.S. National Under-17 team in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Dexter picked up a loose puck in the crease and batted it across the goal line as he was falling to the ice, putting the Phantoms ahead for good.
Scott Moser notched his team-leading eighth goal of the year to open the scoring at 7:41 of the first. Moser picked up the rebound of a Stefan Salituro shot at the top of the crease, and slotted a backhand. Grant Blakey assisted as well.
Less than three minutes later, Miles Winter broke through, making it 2-0 on a wrister over the blocker of U.S. goaltender Brandon Maxwell. Chad Boeckman and Adam Snead picked up the assists. Boeckman had two points on the night.
Tuminello on list
DALLAS, Tex. — Kevin Tuminello, a senior center for the Georgia Tech football team from Boardman High, has been named one of 153 semifinalists from every NCAA and NAIA classification for the Draddy Trophy, one of college football’s top academic-related awards.
Tuminello (6-4, 292), in his third year as the starting center who leads an offensive line that leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in fewest sacks allowed, also recently named ACC Lineman of the Week and is a candidate for the Rimington Trophy.
The two-time ACC All-Academic selection is majoring in building construction, and had a 3.5 cumulative grade point average as of late last year.
The Draddy Trophy, sponsored by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame, recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership.
The NFF Awards Committee will select and announce up to 15 finalists on Oct. 25. Each finalist will be recognized as part of the 2007 National Scholar-Athlete Class and receive an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship.
The Draddy winner, who will receive a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship and a 24-inch, 25-pound bronze trophy, will be announced at the NFF’s Annual Awards Dinner Dec. 4.

POLAND — The Poland High girls will meet Hathaway Brown in the Coaches Team Tennis tournament Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown High School with the winners advancing to state Sunday.
Kucek leads Big Ten
Justin Kucek of Canfield leads the Big Ten in punting average.
Kucek, a graduate of Canfield High who punts for Minnesota, is averaging 44.2 yards per attempt. Jeremy Boone of Penn State is second at 44.1.
Kucek is a junior.
