Churchgoers celebrate Hispanic heritage

YOUNGSTOWN — St. Rose de Lima Church celebrated its Hispanic heritage Sunday, and no one was more proud than Betzy Peacock.

The Liberty resident, who is an engineer at Delphi Packard Electric, set up a display of her native Peru. It featured a slide show on her laptop computer and a blanket made from the fur of four different animals. The blanket is designed to hang on a wall as artwork.

“I like to show people the rich culture that we have,” said Peacock, who moved to this area in 1996 to take a job at Packard.

The event in the church hall was part of Hispanic Heritage Month. Organizers called it Eldia de la Hispanidad (Day of Being Hispanic).

Peacock was one of a dozen people who set up displays on various countries. Entertainment included a group from Cleveland that performed traditional Puerto Rican dances and the Labra Brothers of Youngstown, who sang Mexican songs.
