Ursuline fourth, Warren JFK sixth heading into state golf’s final day

COLUMBUS — Ursuline High was in fourth place in Division II and Warren JFK was sixth in Div. III after the first day of the boys state golf tournament.

The Irish shot a team score of 304 to trail Dayton Chaminade-Julienne (285), defending champion Hunting Valley University School (295) and Pepper Pike Orange (301) after 18 holes. The final round will be played today.

Senior Paul Cene shot a round of 73 (3 over par) at the Ohio State Gray Course to lead Ursuline. Jake Detec and Zach Humphries, also seniors, shot 76 and 77, respectively. Sophomore James Daley shot 78 and junior Ryan Alders had an 84.

Dorian Vauls of Chaminade-Julienne shot a 66 to lead the individual medalists standings.

In Div. III, JFK shot a team score of 339. Fremont St. Joseph fired a 324 for the team lead. Sandusky St. Mary was at 330, Lima Central Catholic 334, Gahanna Columbus Academy 336 and Sugarcreek Garaway 338.

Freshman Bruce Timko fired a 79 to lead JFK. Brian Guarnieri shot an 84, Mike Guarnieri an 87, Nick Basciano an 89 and Matt Litke a 91. All of those players are seniors.

Gahanna Columbus Academy senior Alex Simson shot a 76 to lead the medalists standings.
