Friday’s games
Rangers 3, Capitals 1
NEW YORK — Jaromir Jagr assisted on New York’s three power-play goals in the first period as the Rangers busted out with the man advantage and handed the Washington Capitals their first loss of the season. In what looked like a mismatch, the Rangers brought in an anemic power-play unit that had failed in all 15 chances over the season’s first three games. Washington hadn’t allowed a power-play goal in 12 short-handed situations while jumping to a 3-0 start. That all changed quickly as Scott Gomez, Martin Straka and defenseman Michal Rozsival connected in the first period when the Rangers were handed six power-play chances. Alex Ovechkin answered Gomez’s tally with his 100th career goal in just 167 NHL games.
Blackhawks 3, Red Wings 2
DETROIT — Robert Lang scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period against his former team, helping the Blackhawks get the road win. Brent Seabrook had a goal and an assist, and Patrick Sharp scored for Chicago, which trailed 2-0 after the first period. Lang also had an assist, and Nikolai Khabibulin made 32 saves. Henrik Zetterberg and Kris Draper scored for Detroit, which lost in regulation for the first time this season.
Blues 4, Avalanche 1
ST. LOUIS — Dan Hinote scored two goals in the third period, and goalie Manny Legace made 24 saves to improve his career mark against the Avalanche to 12-1. Brad Boyes scored his fourth goal for the Blues, who extended their winning streak to three games and are 3-1-0 for the first time since 1997-98. Jay McClement had the other St. Louis goal and Paul Kariya picked up an assist, giving him six this season.
Flames 3, Stars 2, OT
DALLAS — Matthew Lombardi scored twice, including the overtime winner, and Calgary rallied for its first victory of the season. Lombardi took possession of the puck deep in the Dallas zone after a turnover by Stars captain Brenden Morrow. He then beat Dallas goaltender Marty Turco at 3:20 of overtime. Jerome Iginla also scored for the Flames (1-2-1), and Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 24 shots.
