Official lists items collected in waste drive
LISBON — Columbiana County residents took advantage of a free opportunity to get rid of household hazardous wastes.
County Commissioner Penny Traina announced Wednesday the total amount collected in four hours Saturday at the courthouse parking lot. All the commissioners were present at the collection.
Waste Technologies Industries, the hazardous waste incinerator in East Liverpool, ran the free collection as part of a settlement in 2006 with regulators from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
WTI says it was operating properly but agreed to pay more than $750,000 to settle the claims.
The dispute was over emissions from chemicals that were in storage while awaiting incineration. There was no evidence that anyone was hurt by the emissions, and WTI denied any wrongdoing.
The items included 800 to 900 tires; 17 pallets of electronics such as televisions, computers and microwave ovens; two cubic-yard boxes of pesticides; three 55-gallon drums of acids; six 55-gallon drums of flammable aerosols and two pallets of lead acid batteries.
WTI also collected three 55-gallon drums of miscellaneous lab-packed waste, 15 cubic-yard boxes and 10 55-gallon drums of oil-based paint, four 55-gallon drums of flammable solvents and 10 cubic-yard boxes and five 55-gallon drums of latex paint.
Workers also collected six 55-gallon drums of motor oil, two 55-gallon drums of antifreeze and four drums of various-sized light bulbs.
