BUILDING NAMES Youngstown city schools
Nearly a dozen of the Youngstown city schools are named after individuals, primarily presidents and former superintendents. Another is named for an area of the city.
Paul C. Bunn Elementary: Named for a former superintendent.
Kirkmere Elementary: Apparently named for a section of the city along Kirk Road.
Taft Elementary: Named for President William Howard Taft.
Williamson Elementary: Named for Warren P. Williamson Jr., a former school board member and founder of WKBN.
P. Ross Berry Middle School: Named for the late architect who designed many of downtown Youngstown’s buildings, including the courthouse.
Harding Elementary: Named for President Warren G. Harding.
Hayes Middle School: Named for President Rutherford B. Hayes.
Volney Rogers Junior High: Named for naturalist Volney Rogers, who founded Mill Creek Park.
Woodrow Wilson High School: Named for President Woodrow Wilson (school being rebuilt as a middle school).
The Rayen School: Named for the late Judge William Rayen, whose will provided for construction of the first Rayen School.
Chaney High School: Named for Dr. N.H. Chaney, a former superintendent.
Choffin Career & Technical Center: Named for Celestin C. Choffin, a prominent civic leader who gave the school district $100,000 to build a vocational education program.
