YOUNGSTOWN — Warriors Inc. is kicking off a life-enrichment program for young men at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Byzantine Center at the Grove, 3801 Shady Run Road. The free program is open to males ages 9 and 25. Participants will be schooled in finance, ethics, integrity and leadership skills. Following the kickoff, the program will continue indefinitely on a biweekly basis Saturday mornings between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Youngstown Christian School, 4401 Southern Blvd. For more information, contact executive director Joe McGeorge or Dollaine Holmes at (330) 783-5440.

Va. Tech rep to visit

YOUNGSTOWN — The head of the counseling department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University will visit Youngstown State University today to personally thank YSU personnel for its support during a difficult time.

Virginia Tech was the scene of a mass murder by a lone gunman who killed 32 people on campus in mid-April. YSU’s counseling department put together a care package for its counterpart at Virginia Tech, sending signed cards with VT and YSU logos and a $400 donation. Dr. Gerald Lawson, director of the counseling department at Virginia Tech, will speak at a reception at 4:30 p.m. today in YSU’s Beeghly College of Education.

East Side carjacking

YOUNGSTOWN — A bar patron told police he was carjacked at gunpoint around 3 a.m. Monday in the 2000 block of McGuffey Road on the East Side. The 33-year-old victim said as he got into the car, a gunman approached and demanded the car and his wallet. The man took the wallet and then fled in the 1998 Ford Taurus on McGuffey Road, reports show.

Burglary alarms

YOUNGSTOWN — Two Wick Avenue businesses were targeted by a thief or thieves, police said.

The owner of VIP Car Care, 1000 Wick, got a call from his alarm company and went to check the business, finding that someone had broken into the office and taken cash Monday. Police who were called around 2 a.m. discovered a hole was made through an exterior wall to gain entry.

At 2:35 a.m., the burglar alarm at Jump Start, 833 Wick, sounded. Police who responded found that someone had tried to enter by prying open a window but didn’t get in, possibly because the alarm sounded.

New 4-H dog club

CANFIELD — There will be a meeting of the Steel Valley K-9s, a new 4-H dog club, at 7 p.m. Thursday, at Lord of LIfe Lutheran Church, 550 North Broad St. (state Route 46).

4-H is open to all youth ages 5 to 19 years. Steel Valley K-9s will be training members on how to work with their dogs on basic obedience, agility, grooming and handling, dog care, showmanship and rally obedience. The club will be participating in the Haunted Hayride at Boardman Park. Pumpkin Patch Festival

NILES — Events continue through Oct. 31 at First Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Robbins and Summit avenues, for the Pumpkin Patch Festival. The festival runs noon to 8 p.m. weekdays. It runs noon to 9 p.m. weekends, when special events are planned, such as entertainment by the band The Bridge from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Oct. 20, fire safety house from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 20, a Civil War encampment Oct. 20 and 21, a petting zoo Saturday and Oct. 27 and the clown Karmel Apple from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 20 and 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 27.
