Celtics beat Raptors
in NBA preseason
ROME — Kevin Garnett had 19 points and 16 rebounds in his Celtics debut, and Boston ruined Andrea Bargnani’s homecoming with an 89-85 preseason victory over the Toronto Raptors on Saturday.
Paul Pierce added 21 points for Boston, while Ray Allen had an off night with only 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting.
The start of the NBA Europe Live tour marked the Celtics’ first game since Garnett and Allen joined the team, creating a “Big 3” with Boston veteran Pierce.
Bargnani, last year’s top overall draft pick by Toronto, played his first game in his hometown in an NBA jersey and scored 13 points in less than 15 minutes.
T.J. Ford and Anthony Parker started at guard for the Raptors, with Chris Bosh and Jason Kapono at forward and Bargnani at center.
Ford led the Raptors with 15 points.
The other Celtics starters were Rajon Rondo at point guard and Kendrick Perkins at center.
The Raptors play Roma on Sunday, then travel to Spain to face Real Madrid. The Celtics meet Garnett’s former club, the Minnesota Timberwolves, on Wednesday in London.
Man United tops
Premier League
LONDON — Manchester United finally found its scoring touch Saturday, beating Wigan 4-0 and taking the Premier League lead for the first time this season.
Cristiano Ronaldo had two goals and Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez also scored to give United 20 points — one more than Arsenal, which hosts Sunderland today. Aston Villa beat West Ham 1-0 in Saturday’s other Premier League game.
United scored all its goals after halftime. It was the first time this season United has scored more than two goals in any competition. United’s 1-0 victory Tuesday over AS Roma in the Champions League was its sixth single-goal victory in eight games this season.
Reed looking
ahead to Olympics
CARSON, Calif. — A popular question each year at USA Cycling’s elite national championships is just how many titles has Jennie Reed won, anyway?
For the record, even Reed doesn’t know the exact number of stars-and-stripes jerseys in her collection. She’s lost count, a testament to her longtime dominance as the top women’s sprinter in America’s track cycling stable.
Whatever the actual number is — some believe at least 12, maybe more — it’s grown this week. Reed won the keirin Thursday, the sprint Friday and added another title Saturday when she, Sarah Hammer and Dotsie Bausch teamed to win the first-ever women’s team pursuit by a whopping 9 seconds.
“For me, getting a national title isn’t as exciting as it used to be,” Reed said.
Reed’s not downplaying the importance of winning at the national level. It’s just that she’s a heavy favorite every year, far-and-away the best sprinter in the U.S., and the only surprise would be if she didn’t win her specialty events. Consider what one racer asked her after Thursday’s win: “Did you even break a sweat?”
Khan stops Lawton
NOTTINGHAM, England — Amir Khan successfully defended his Commonwealth lightweight title Saturday night, stopping Scott Lawton in the fourth round for his 14th straight victory.
Khan, the 2004 Olympic lightweight silver medalist, had the challenger in trouble with a left-right combination and then unleashed a barrage of blows without reply, forcing referee Victor Loughran to halt the fight with 30 seconds left in the fourth.
It was a far more polished performance than his last fight against Willie Limond two months ago when Khan was knocked down for the first time only to leave the Scot with a broken jaw after an eight-round stoppage.
“I had a lot of critics from the last fight, but that’s boxing,” said Khan, one of England’s best boxers. “It’s a learning curve. I proved a lot of my critics wrong. I’m a better fighter, and boxing’s going right for me now.”
Rugby World Cup
PARIS — France ousted favorite New Zealand 20-18 and England upset Australia 12-10 on Saturday, as the Rugby World Cup underdogs had their day.
Frederic Michalak set up the winning try for Yannick Jauzion just seconds after coming on with his team down 18-13, ensuring France returns home as a semifinalist and New Zealand’s 20-year wait for the title goes on.
“It’s going to hurt for a long, long time,” All Blacks captain Richie McCaw said. “I’m lost for words, we believed we could come out and play well. We didn’t play as well as we could have.”
Jonny Wilkinson, whose extra-time drop goal beat Australia in the final four years ago, coolly kicked four penalties as England beat the Wallabies for the third time in a row in World Cup games.
Following their upsets, France and England meet Oct. 13 at the Stade de France.
The other quarterfinals are today, with South Africa expected to beat Fiji and Argentina favored against Scotland.
