ASHVILLE, Ohio — Marine Corps Col. Rhonda Cornum, M.D., an Ohio native and a former prisoner of war, is the featured speaker at the Ohio Women Veterans Conference on Oct. 20 at Teays Valley High School, 3887 state Route 752 in Ashville, which is about 20 miles south of Columbus.
All women who have served in the military are invited to attend the conference geared to the needs of women veterans by providing information and resources as well as honoring and recognizing them for their service to the nation.
There is no cost to attend and lunch will be provided. Sign-in begins at 8 a.m. The event begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. The registration deadline is Oct. 15. Registration is required online at http://veteransaffairs.ohio.gov and click on GOVA.

The conference is sponsored by the Ohio Governor’s Advisory Committee for Women Veterans and the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the VA Healthcare System of Ohio.
Beirut memorial

Korean War ceremony
GREENVILLE, Pa. — A recognition ceremony for Korean War veterans living in the 17th legislative district will be hosted by state Rep. Michele Brooks, R-17, of Jamestown, Pa., at 10 a.m. Nov. 16 in the Lutheran Hermitage Room at Thiel College in Greenville. All veterans interested in attending may call Brooks’ office at (800) 457-2040 and give their name, home address, telephone number, branch of service, rank and time of service and number of family members attending the event. Business symposium
BOARDMAN — The Ohio Small Business Development Center at Youngstown State University is offering a discussion of assistance to military veteran-owned business and returning military personnel, including Guard and Reserve members, on Oct. 17 at the YSU Metro Campus at Southwood Commons on Market Street. The 90 minute session will focus on the following:
UPatriot Express loan program, a new business loan initiative specifically for members of the military, veterans and their spouses.
UGeneral selling to the federal government with an emphasis on the mandated 3 percent goal for service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses and the self-imposed 7 percent Veterans Affairs goal.
UA review of the Regional Veterans Business Symposium in November; and an opportunity to meet buyers from Federal agencies and large businesses who are looking for veteran and service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses.

Marine Corps Pvt. Jeff Savnik, a 2006 graduate of Youngstown Wilson High School, has completed the Marine Corps Engineering School at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Savnik, the son of Theresa and Richard Cessna of Youngstown, is currently home on leave before leaving Oct. 17 for a two-year assignment in Japan, where he will be assigned to the 36th Combat Services Support Detachment.

James P. Richards III has graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) Leader Development and Assessment Course at Fort Lewis, Wash., and has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army. Richards is the son of James P. and Dorothy P. Richards of Banner Elk, N.C. His wife, Heather, is the daughter of Jay and Jackie Sweet of Volant, Pa.
