Theologian to speak at YSU


YOUNGSTOWN — “God and Darwin: Are They Reconcilable?” will be the topic of the next Dr. Thomas and Albert J. Shipka Speaker Series at Youngstown State University.

Dr. John Haught, senior fellow of science and religion at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University, will discuss the issue at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center.

Haught is a Roman Catholic theologian and an exert in systematic theology, with a special interest in issues of science, cosmology, ecology and reconciling evolution and religion.

He graduated from St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore and received a doctorate in theology from the Catholic University of America.

Among his awards is the 2002 Owen Garrigan Award in Science and Religion and the 2004 Sophia Award for Theological Excellence.

He is the author of several books on the creation-evolution controversy, including Deeper Than Darwin: The Prospect for Religion in the Age of Evolution, God After Darwin: A Theology of Evolution and Responses to 101 Questions on God and Evolution.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
