BOARDMAN — Michael Fountaine, a senior at Boardman High School, has been named a recipient of the Rensselaer Medal by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. The medal is presented to students who have distinguished themselves in math and science.
Each medalist who subsequently enrolls at Rensselaer receives a scholarship of $60,000 payable in four annual awards of $15,000.

COLUMBIANA — The Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center has named the winners of the 2007 Harvest Days Photo Contest.
The winners of the “Nature Beaver Creek” category are: first, Emmalee Dunn of East Liverpool; second, D.D. Fonner of Lisbon; third, Emmalee Dunn; honorable mention, Amanda Wolfe of Rogers. Winners in the “People In the Park” category are: first, Cindy Parker of Rogers; second, Randy Hoover of Columbiana; third, Gladys Stoddard of East Liverpool, honorable mention, Gladys Stoddard.
All winning photos are on display in the education center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Sunday.
TCTC nurse aide class
CHAMPION — The final Nurse Aide Class of the year at Trumbull Career & Technical Center will begin Oct. 22 at the TCTC Adult Training center.
The class will meet from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. three days a week with graduation set for Nov. 15.
The cost of the class is $490 with an additional fee of $95 payable to the state testing agency for the State Tested Nurse Assistant examination. Limited financial assistance is available.

Keeping kids safe online
CANFIELD — Mahoning County Educational Service Center and Adult Education at Mahoning County Career & Technical Center are offering a “Parents Getting Cyberspace Smart” class to help parents keep up with their children on the Internet. Parents can be the key to safe and rewarding online experiences for their children. The class, at $49, will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 16 at the MCCTC. Call (330) 729-4100to register.
Sending items to military
WARREN — Life Skills Center of Trumbull County is taking part in the Operation First Response drive, collecting items for wounded military men and women and their families.
Collections are being accepted at the school at 458 Franklin St. SE from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday now until Nov. 9.
“We’re trying to teach civic responsibility,” said Scott Davis, social studies teacher and a Gulf War veteran. Those in the military enjoy receiving items from home, he said.
“People sent us letters and that meant so much to me,” he said. “I still have everything sent to me, and it was sent from people I don’t know.”
Operation First Response sends backpacks filled with T-shirts, boxer shorts, sweat pants or shorts, socks and a complete array of hygiene items along with a handmade lap quilt in each backpack.
All hygiene items must be travel size, and new black backpacks without logos can be donated, but must be at least 17 inches by 12.5 inches by 7 inches.
Operation First Response backpacks are sent to the combat support hospitals (CHS) in Iraq, Landstuhl Army Medical Hospital in Germany and other locations.
Life Skills Center of Trumbull County is a charter school that accommodates students ages 16-22 who are seeking alternatives to traditional public schools.
‘Grant Seeking Basics’
WARREN — Kent State University Trumbull Campus Library is offering a free class for area nonprofit organizations seeking help in applying for grants and foundation funds.
“Grant Seeking Basics” will be offered from 10 a.m.. to noon Oct. 29 in the campus library computer lab at 4314 Mahoning Ave. NW.
It will cover the essentials of the fund-raising process and address the issues of seeking funding from corporations and community foundations. Preregistration is required and can be done at http://foundationcenter.org/cleveland/gbclwarren.html.

The senior cosmetology class at Choffin Career and Technical Center will open its cosmetology clinic beginning Wednesday.
Some of the services include: chemical, press/curls, manicures, pedicures and haircuts.
Clinic hours are noon to 2:30 p.m. every Wednesday and Thursday.
