Howland stays perfect with 49-7 win at Salem


SALEM — Nate Cope scored four touchdowns, three on runs of 6, 16 and 11 yards and the other on a 16-yard pass from Matt Preston, to pace the Howland High football team to a 49-7 victory in a Metro Athletic Conference game on Friday.

Preston also scored on a 1-yard plunge while Dante Marsh raced 54 yards and Mike Mangiarelli 4 yards to the Tigers’ other TDs. Eric Albani was 7-for-7 kicking extra points.

Marsh finished with 112 yards in 10 carries while Preston was 4-for-18 passing for 157 yards for the Tigers (7-0, 4-0), who play Poland on Friday for sole possession of the MAC lead.

Salem averted a shutout when Jason Keniston hauled in a 20-yard scoring pass from Zac O’Brien, who wound up 15-for-25 for 114 yards. Ben Eisel caught eight passes for 66 yards.

East Liverpool 13

EAST LIVERPOOL — Niles senior Nate Ganyard rushed 15 times for 131 yards and three touchdowns and added another score on a 9-yard fumble return to lift the Red Dragons, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Vince Melillo completed 5 of 10 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns for Niles (4-2, 2-2). Anthony Mullen caught two passes for 116 yards.

Denny Ours led East Liverpool (0-6, 0-3) with 23 carries for 128 yards and a touchdown.
