IGUANA FACTS | Things to know

Anyone keeping an iguana as a pet should be aware of these tips:

Iguanas are herbivores. Dark green, leafy vegetables such as collard, mustard, turnip and dandelion greens and small amounts of kale and chard and spinach chopped fine. Iguanas require a calcium supplement.

Temperature should be 85 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and no lower than 75 degrees at night.

Newspapers and paper towels make the best cage lining since the bedding needs to be changed daily.

Healthy iguanas need to visit a veterinarian at least once a year for a checkup, including shots.

Iguanas should not be allowed to roam around the house. They should be kept in an aquarium, large polyurethane-sealed wood, glass or wire cage.

To clean, fill a bathtub half full of room-temperature water and the iguana will swim for hours. Bathing helps moisten its skin and aid in its peeling process. It also keeps bacteria from under its nails and claws.
