Canfield qualifies in Div. I golf event
The Division II sectional tennis tournament begins Wednesday.
VIENNA — Canfield High boys golf team finished fourth Monday at the Division I sectional tournament at Candywood Golf Course and qualified for next week’s district tournament at Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinckley.
The top four teams advanced to the district.
The Cardinals were led by seniors Ed Carissimi and Erich Brenner who shot 77 and 79 respectively. While the rest of the Cardinals included Nick Hardy 81, Bob Eddy 83 and Joe Mildore 89.
Two area golfers also qualified as individual players as the top four players not on a qualifying teams also advanced.
Fitch High senior David Donaldson shot a 77 and Boardman senior Mike Lower finished with a 78 to advance.
Stow-Munroe Falls was the low team with 313, Walsh Jesuit second 315, Hudson third 319 and Canfield fourth at 320.
Tennis pairings
Poland High’s doubles team of seniors Megan Bennett and Jessica Mullis qualified for the Division II state tournament a year ago.
Wednesday the Bulldogs top duo will begin the process toward a return trip when they begin sectional play at the Volney Rogers courts.
The Division II sectional will begin at 8:15 a.m. for doubles play and 8:30 a.m. for singles, which is being held at Struthers High School.
The semifinals and finals will be held Saturday at Canfield High School beginning at 9 a.m.
Bennett and Mullis will play their first match Wednesday against the winner of a play-in match between Brittany Bovo and Rachel Elias of Struthers and Amanda Sacco and Lauren Streb of McDonald.
Bennett and Mullis are the No. 1 seeds in the doubles, while Cardinal Mooney’s Jaclyn DiDomenico and Allison St. George are No. 2 seed. The other seeded doubles teams included Alexa Marino and Danielle Mullis of Poland and Alison Rossi and Gina Fredericka of Warren JFK.
Rossi and Fredericka qualified for district play a year ago in doubles as did Marino.
The top seed in singles play is Ravenna’s Mariah Mostardi, a junior who qualified for district play a year ago.
No. 2 seed Alyssa Tom of Poland, a senior, also reached the district level last season. Junior Marissa Nocera of Warren JFK was the No. 3 seed and Cardinal Mooney senior Brianne Thomas was seeded fourth.
The top four finishers in both doubles and singles will advance to the Division II district tournament next week in Canton.
