CANFIELD — A project that would eventually open up land for development along Route 46 is getting support from trustees.

They unanimously voted Monday to back the Mahoning County sanitary engineer in seeking state funds to bring sewer lines from Westbury Park at the end of Gibson Road out to Route 46.

From there, they said, sewer lines could be built along Route 46, opening up farmland to the north of Shields Road for development.

Sewer lines could also be run south of Shields to the Canfield city line, trustees said.

Reese said the township could receive state funds through the county again to run the lines along Route 46.

Reese said sewers on Route 46 would bring relief to homeowners on Deer Spring Run, Revere Run and Whispering Meadows Drive whose septic tanks are failing. The three roads are off Route 46 below Gibson.

Reese and trustee Randy Brashen said the clay soil in the area is causing septic systems to fail.

Brashen and Reese said running the lines under the turnpike would be the costliest part of the project.

People who live along Gibson Road would have to pay tap-in fees, they said.

Brashen said county Sanitary Engineer Joe Warino wants the backing of the trustees before he seeks funding.

Dredging plan

In other business, trustees voted to apply for a $250,000 state grant to dredge and widen Indian Run Creek from St. Andrews Court to Star Center Circle.

The project would be the fourth phase of a stormwater control plan designed to help people in the neighborhood who are affected by flooding.

Trustees also said they heard from the county prosecutor’s office about whether they can meet in private with the city to talk about a study on pros and cons of a merger between the two. The prosecutor’s office said the meetings must be public.
