Newton Falls delays vote

NEWTON FALLS — Village council delayed voting on an ordinance to take part in an $800 million hydroelectric project.

The ordinance would have entered the city into an agreement with American Municipal Power of Ohio to take part in a Hydro Matrix Project along the Ohio River.

However, council member Eric Thompson said he couldn’t vote on the agreement Monday without seeing how the project would affect electric rates.

Council voted to postpone the second reading of the ordinance until the next meeting, Oct. 15. City Manager Jack Haney said he will have rate information ready then.

The agreement would bring the city additional power, which the city could use or sell.

The Hydro Matrix Project includes the construction of three hydroelectric plants in West Virginia, Indiana and Kentucky. About 60 communities are taking part in the project.
