No rise in millage in ’08

MERCER, Pa. — There will be no increase in county property tax millage in 2008, Mercer County commissioners said Wednesday at their agenda meeting. They plan to unveil the preliminary 2008 budget when they meet in regular session at 10:30 a.m. today in the assembly room at the Mercer County Courthouse.

Money missing at school

YOUNGSTOWN — A special education teacher at Chaney High School told police that she discovered $134 missing from a cabinet in her classroom early Tuesday. No damage was done to the cabinet and the key was in her desk drawer, hidden. An 18-year-old boy, not a member of the class, was seen on the security tape from 10:46 to 10:48 a.m. Monday and juggling something in his hands as he walked out of the room, reports show. The investigation has been turned over to the police department’s juvenile division.

Considering complaint

SALEM — The Ohio Elections Commission will consider a complaint by longtime Salem Democrat Georgianna Bailey against two Republican winners. Bailey charged that Jerry Wolford, Salem’s mayor-elect, and James Armeni, Salem’s auditor who was re-elected, did not have their campaign information on signs in the November election as required by law. Philip C. Richter, the executive director of the commission, said he was awaiting a response from the two winners. Bailey had submitted a photograph that didn’t clearly show if identification information was on the signs, he said. Richter said information with the candidate’s name and address has to be somewhere on a sign. Wolford said his information was on his signs. Armeni could not be reached. Each faces up to a $500 fine if the commission should rule against them.
