YOUNGSTOWN — A solid concrete statue of the Virgin Mary that weighs about 70 pounds is missing from a yard in the 3500 block of Shirley Road where it had been displayed for 17 years, police said. The absence of the statue, in white gown, blue shawl and veil, was noticed when the owners went to put Christmas trees around it Monday. A photo of the statue, valued at $500, was given to police.

Crash closes Route 170

POLAND — A cement truck overturned on state Route 170 near Western Reserve Road, closing the highway for most of Tuesday afternoon and into the late evening. According to officials from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the truck swerved to avoid traffic about 1 p.m., hitting a stop sign and a utility pole before dumping its contents and fuel onto the road. Local safety and Haz-Mat crews were still cleaning the accident scene at 7 p.m., according to the Western Reserve Joint Fire District, which serves the village and township. The truck driver was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center with minor injuries. His name was unavailable at press time.

Struthers council

STRUTHERS — City council will meet in regular session at 7 p.m. today preceded by a council caucus at 6:15 p.m. On the agenda is the final reading of legislation that, if passed, would fix salaries for elected officials, including a reduction in pay for the mayor and auditor.

Rolling Cash 5 winner

HUBBARD — Robert Sattler, 77, claimed the $110,000 jackpot from the Nov. 24 Rolling Cash 5 drawing. He made his claim Monday afternoon at the Ohio Lottery’s Youngstown regional office. 

The retiree says that he plans to buy an automobile with his winnings. He bought his winning ticket at the Church Hill Commons Giant Eagle, 4700 Belmont Avenue, in Youngstown. The store will receive a $500 agent sales bonus.

Break-in at school

YOUNGSTOWN — Over Thanksgiving break, a window was slid open at Eagle Heights Academy on Market Street and two ceiling projectors valued at $500 were stolen from two classrooms, reports show. Also taken were several gallons of juice, with some of the beverage left outside the window. It’s possible the window had not been secured, police said.

Event raises $10,877

BOARDMAN — Boardman Township Park raised $10,877 during its 15th annual Halloween celebration. The proceeds were distributed among local nonprofit organizations. With more than 200 volunteers, the 4-H Alumni, 4-H clubs of Mahoning County, Key Club of Boardman High School and Interact Club of Boardman High School worked about 40 hours over three weekends to provide family-friendly haunted hayrides.

Man reports carjacking

YOUNGSTOWN — A 27-year-old Girard man told police he was carjacked while stopped at the traffic light at Wirt Street and Delaware Avenue around 11 p.m. Monday. The victim said a man he thinks he knows from a local crack house approached and threatened him with a gun. The Scopley Street man gave up his 1999 Chevrolet Malibu, and the suspect drove off. The victim said he had been driving around the North Side trying to buy crack cocaine.

Robbed at gunpoint

AUSTINTOWN — A woman was robbed of $130 by a man who grabbed her and pressed a semiautomatic handgun to her head, township police report. The victim, 19, was getting out of her car in a driveway on Mulberry Run at 12:05 a.m. Tuesday, the report says. A man walked around the side of the garage there, grabbed the woman and pulled the gun, the report says. The woman told police he went through her pockets and then her purse. He took the cash and fled on foot. She was not injured. When police arrived, they tracked the suspect with a police dog down Winslow Drive. At one point on Winslow, the dog lost the scent, the report says.
