Canfield cruises to easy victory over Springfield


Howland opened the season with a 53-44 victory over Liberty.

CANFIELD — Seniors Matt Keating and Brian Fox scored 15 and 11 points, respectively, and Andrew Kuchmaner grabbed six rebounds for the Canfield High basketball team in Tuesday’s 55-30 win over Springfield.

The Cardinals had a 24-6 lead after eight minutes. Canfield made 23 of 44 goals to Springfield’s 11 of 37.

Junior Todd Kibby had 10 points and two rebounds for the Tigers.

Howland 53, Liberty 44

HOWLAND — The Tigers (1-0) pulled away from a close nonleague game with a 10-4 surge in the fourth quarter.

Nathan Cope, who connected on four 3-point baskets, paced the Tigers with 23 points. Jared Kirin added 12 points and he grabbed nine of 36 rebounds.

Anthony Cleveland led the Leopards (0-1) with 10 points.

Salem 63, Hubbard 48

SALEM — The Quakers (2-0) built a 30-17 lead by intermission then cruised the victory in Salem High John Cabas gymnasium.

Austen Hutton paced the Quakers balanced attack with 19 points. Phil Bennett added 13 and Jordan Strabala had 10. Nick Anderson pulled down seven rebounds while Bennett and Zack O’Brien each had six.

Corey Hitt led the Eagles (0-2) with 14 points. Robert Wigfall and Kurtis Drummond each had 10. Hitt and Drummond had six rebounds apiece.

Warren Harding 72, East 44

YOUNGSTOWN — Sheldon Brogdon scored 17 points to lead four Harding players in double figures as the Raiders cruised past East in a Steel Valley Conference game.

Brogdon also had five rebounds and three steals for the Raiders, who led 46-23 at halftime.

Desmar Jackson added 14 points, six rebounds and six assists. Damian Eargle had 12 points and seven rebounds while Chris Henderson had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Kenny Carter led East (0-2) with 13 points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

Alliance 62, Fitch 33

AUSTINTOWN — Nursing a 17-14 lead, the Aviators (1-0) posted a 14-3 run to end the second quarter.

Terrence Williams led the Alliance attack with 17 points. Deondre Terrell scored 10.

For the Falcons (0-1), Jon Stockman scored nine points and Mike Miles netted seven.

Champion 70, Niles 61

CHAMPION —A second quarter surge 24-8 by Champion (2-0) gave the Golden Flashes a 35-22 lead at halftime and the Red Dragons (0-2) couldn’t catch up.

Markel Vaughn, Sean Sumner and Kris Wildman sparked Champion’s balanced attack with 21, 18 and 12 points, respectively.

Vince Melillo led the Red Dragons with 22 points. Ryan Berenics chipped in with 18 and Ryan Franz finished with 11.
