Information about diesel-fueled public school buses:
Some 390,000 of 450,000 public school buses in the United States are powered by diesel fuel.
About two-thirds of diesel school buses were built between 1990 and 2002. Emissions from those buses can be made cleaner by upgrading or retrofitting emission control systems.
About one-third of diesel school buses were built before 1990. They are the heaviest polluters and are recommended for early replacement.
