Tips for shoppers

PHILADELPHIA — With stores are already jammed as people begin their holiday shopping, Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett warns consumers to remember to ask about return policies and re-stocking fees before buying a gift, and to always get receipts. Corbett also says shoppers should find out the fees associated with some gift cards before they buy them because some expire or lose value within a certain amount of time.

Promotion extended

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A promotion in which a customer buying a $188 computer in the U.S. and Canada automatically donates a second one to a child in a developing country was extended until year’s end, organizers said Thursday. The “Give One, Get One” program will run through Dec. 31, instead of ending Nov. 26, according to the One Laptop Per Child Program, a nonprofit spinoff from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Resentencing postponed

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Former Wal-Mart executive Thomas Coughlin’s resentencing for bilking the world’s largest retailer will wait until after the U.S. Supreme Court decides a case regarding how judges sentence convicts. Coughlin pleaded guilty in January 2006 to felony wire fraud and tax evasion charges after embezzling cash, gift cards and merchandise from Wal-Mart, where he worked 28 years and was a protégé to founder Sam Walton.
