Coldwater romps to advance to another title tilt

Mentor and St. Xavier will square off in the Division I championship.

CLAYTON — Tony Harlamert scored three rushing touchdowns and ran back an interception 72 yards for another TD to lead Coldwater past Williamsport Westfall 56-14 Saturday night in a Division IV state semifinal game.

The Cavaliers (13-1) will play defending champion Mooney in the championship game Saturday at 3 p.m. in Massillon.

Coldwater’s defense racked up seven sacks and held Westfall to just 16 yards rushing, while the Cavaliers offense rushed for 294 yards and threw for another 155 behind solid blocking.

Westfall hadn’t allowed more than 28 points in a game this year, but Coldwater had that many at halftime.

Division I

Mentor 39, Brunswick 14

PARMA — Bart Tanski passed for 321 yards and three touchdowns to lead Mentor to a win over Brunswick.

Mentor (11-2) will play Cincinnati St. Xavier (14-0) in the Division I championship Saturday in Canton. The Cardinals lost the title game last year to Hilliard Davidson, 36-35, in double overtime.

Trailing 14-10 at halftime, Mentor forced four second-half turnovers and scored 29 unanswered points, sending Brunswick (13-1) to its only loss of the season.

Brunswick’s Sean Bedevelsky threw two touchdown passes in the first half but had three interceptions in the second half. He finished with 260 yards passing.

Cincinnati St. Xavier 10, Dublin Coffman 7

DAYTON — Danny Milligan scored on an 8-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Cincinnati St. Xavier held on to beat Dublin Coffman in a Div. I state semifinal.

With seven seconds left, safety Fred Craig tackled Coffman receiver Trey Fairchild at the Bomber’s 8-yard line, and time expired before Coffman (13-1), which was out of timeouts, could spike the ball to stop the clock.

The Bombers (14-0) will be seeking their second state title in three years.

Milligan also kicked a 37-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for St. Xavier.

Quarterback Zack Stoudt had Coffman’s only score, a 1-yard run to complete a 10-play, 75-yard drive with 7:06 left in the fourth quarter.

Division VI

Newark Catholic 21,
Springfield Catholic Central 14

UPPER ARLINGTON — Mark Nichols ran for 253 yards and two touchdowns and came up with an important interception to help Newark Catholic beat Springfield Catholic Central.

The Green Wave (12-2) plays Bascom Hopewell-Loudon (14-0) in the championship game Saturday in Canton.

Springfield Catholic Central (13-1) drove 57 yards for a touchdown on its first possession, but Newark Catholic led 14-7 at halftime on the strength of Nichols’ rushing and an effective pass rush.

Nichols scored what proved to be the winning touchdown in the third quarter on a 3-yard run that made it 21-7. His big interception came at the end of the fourth and closed Springfield Catholic Central’s final drive.

Bascom Hopewell-Loudon 41,
Ada 38 OT

FINDLAY — Tyler Brown passed for 352 yards and two touchdowns and Travis Wise ran for a 1-yard score in overtime to give Bascom Hopewell-Loudon the win over Ada.

Hopewell-Loudon tied the game at 14 to open a wild third quarter. Ada answered that with an 81-yard touchdown pass from Zac Dysert to Nate Vermillion on the next play from scrimmage. The Chieftains came right back with a 96-yard kickoff return by Adam Brickner.

Ada’s Zac Dysert completed 29 of 48 passes for 426 yards and four touchdowns. Kyle Baker caught 14 passes for 234 yards and two TDs.

But Ada’s high-powered offense had to settle for a field goal on its first overtime possession, and the subsequent touchdown run by Hopewell-Loudon’s Wise made the difference.
