POLAND — A group of business owners and community leaders wants to resuscitate an old plan to link Poland, Struthers and Lowellville via a hiking trail along the Mahoning River.

A meeting is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Poland Branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. It’s open to the public.

Ron Eiselstein, a village businessman, is spearheading the effort. The proposed seven-mile trail would begin in Lowellville and snake along the Mahoning River through Struthers, around Lake Hamilton to Yellow Creek in Poland Village.

Eiselstein believes the trail would draw people into the communities.

No cost estimates have been determined and no funding secured, he said, adding that the committee is only exploratory.

William DeCicco, executive director of CASTLO Industrial Park in Struthers and a member of the Mahoning River Consortium, supports the trail idea.

“It would be a good quality-of-life thing,” DeCicco said. “It would go through a nice, attractive, natural area.”
