CANFIELD — Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Stephen A. Murphy of the Canfield post was honored with an Ace Award for excellence in auto larceny enforcement. He recovered five vehicles worth $8,200 and apprehended five suspects. A certificate, uniform ribbon and Ace license plates for display on his cruiser were presented to him. Murphy, his wife and son live in Youngstown.

Christmas-tree sale

NEW MIDDLETOWN — The Springfield Township Fire Department Station 21, 10720 Struthers Road, will sell Christmas trees starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Hours will be 5-9 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The trees will be fresh cut Saturday and will be locally grown. Proceeds will help the firefighters buy and update equipment.

Donations for program

LEETONIA — The “Care and Share Program” is taking donations to help needy families during the holidays.

The program is being run by Constable Dan Valentine of the Salem Township Police Department and Chief John Soldano of the Leetonia Police Department.

Because of the variety of ages and interests of those in need, the program this year is asking for monetary donations, gift cards or gift certificates, or sponsorships of individuals and families.

Donations may be mailed to, or dropped off, at the Leetonia Police Department, 300 E. Main St., Leetonia, 44431.

2008 memberships

LISBON — Memberships for 2008 in the Columbiana County Agricultural Society are on sale. Membership certificates cost $1. Members of the agricultural society are entitled to vote on, or be a candidate for, the fair board directors.

The 2008 membership certificates are good from Dec. 1, 2007, to Nov. 30, 2008, and are available to all residents of Columbiana County who will be at least 18 years of age as of Oct. 1, 2008, the date of the annual election of fair board directors.

Memberships are available during fair office hours during the summer months; by calling the fair office at (330) 424-5531 and requesting a membership ticket; or from any current fair board director until 11 p.m. on the last night of the Columbiana County Fair on Aug. 3, 2008.

Columbia Gas donates

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania has donated $2,500 to the Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County.

“We are grateful for the continued support we have received from Columbia Gas of Pa.,” said Melissa Pearce, executive director of the Crisis Shelter. “Columbia’s gift will help us fulfill our mission and implement new projects in 2008.”  

The Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County acts as the community’s response to violence and abuse, offering comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and other serious crimes, along with prevention education and intervention training activities to school students, community members and professionals.
