62-inch TV stolen

YOUNGSTOWN — The resident of a home in the 200 block of Reel Street told police someone broke into his home and stole a 62-inch television set and about 200 DVDs. The victim said he left home around 5:30 p.m. Thursday and returned around 12:30 a.m. Friday to discover that his house had been ransacked and items taken. Entry was gained by breaking a kitchen window at the rear of the home, police said.

Robbery on South Ave.

YOUNGSTOWN — A 22-year-old Broadway Street man was robbed at gunpoint on South Avenue as he walked home from work, police said. The victim said he left work at an East Midlothian Avenue bar shortly after 1 a.m. Friday and was on South Avenue at Avondale Avenue. A white Pontiac Grand Prix pulled up to him, and a man got out of the passenger side of the vehicle with what appeared to be a handgun. The man demanded money, and when the victim said he had none, threatened to shoot the victim, police said. The victim told police he then handed over some cash, and the gunman got back into the car and left.

Touch of Love

YOUNGSTOWN — Everlife Worship Center, 474 Early Road, will host a Touch of Love event with food, entertainment and giveaways at 4 p.m. Dec. 1. The event is geared to those housed at the Rescue Mission.

2 fires in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN — A Wendover Circle man told firefighters he was awakened by his carbon monoxide detector when fire broke out in his home around 1:30 a.m. Friday. Jason LeMasters, of 3319 N. Wendover Circle, said he found smoke in the basement and discovered that the floor joist under the fireplace was ablaze. Firefighters said he tried to put the fire out himself but was unable to do so. Firefighters said they removed the bottom of the firebox in the living room fireplace to extinguish the fire. City firefighters were also called to a vacant house fire at 1604 Oak St. shortly after 2 a.m. Friday. The two-story wood structure was heavily involved in fire when crews arrived and damage was estimated at $7,000.

Three thefts of copper

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — City police are investigating three large copper thefts from area businesses. Police Chief Tom Sansone said they are trying to determine if there was any connection among the three.

More than $1,500 worth of insulated copper wire was taken from a Giordano Construction vehicle parked at Tanner Industries at 2021 W. State St. sometime over last weekend.

Another weekend theft of spools of copper pipe and wire, as well as rolls of welding cable occurred at Consolidated Container on Grove Street.

Police have arrested a 16-year-old juvenile in a third weekend copper theft at the Penn Power substation on Newell Avenue. Police said holes were cut in a chain link fence sometime over the weekend and then copper wires were cut from transformers, electrical towers and a portable substation. The boy will be charged in juvenile court, Sansone said.

Infant signing classes

YOUNGSTOWN — The Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley, 2008 Lynn Ave., is offering a four-week infant signing series starting at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Research suggests that while communicating with their hands, infants are increasing brain development, including their verbal skills. Also, children and parents who can communicate earlier also experience less frustration, said Amy-Anne Kibler, executive director of The Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley.

Barbara Ricks, a speech and language pathologist, and Karen Wenzel, a certified sign language interpreter, are the instructors for the infant signing classes, which are open to children ages 6 months to 2 years. Boardman zoning query

BOARDMAN — Township trustees are seeking letters of interest from township residents requesting to serve on the zoning board of appeals and zoning commission. A letter of interest is to be submitted by Dec. 14 to the zoning office, 8299 Market St., Boardman, Ohio 44512, Attn: Darren L. Crivelli.

The board of appeals has final jurisdiction within the township regarding variances and conditional uses. The zoning commission forwards recommendations to trustees regarding proposed amendments to the zoning ordinance and map. All applicants must reside within the township.
