Facility wins safety award

YOUNGSTOWN — The Heluva Good Facility in Youngstown received an award in the Transportation Safety category at the fourth annual Dairy Industry Safety Recognition Awards and Achievements Certificates ceremony of the International Dairy Foods Association in Chicago.

Heluva Good’s parent company, HP Hood LLC, and its subsidiaries, which include Kemps, Crowley Foods and Rosenberger’s, won a combined 22 of the 62 awards up for grabs at the awards ceremony.

“The IDFA safety awards are an indication of the commitment that Heluva Good has made to workplace safety,” said Lynne Bohan, spokesperson for HP Hood.

According to the IDFA, the operations for each nominated company were judged solely on specific data required annually by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration on the facility’s “Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses” report.

Discrimination settlement

COLUMBUS — The government says the operator of hair salons inside Wal-Mart stores will pay $100,000 to settle a racial discrimination and retaliation case in Ohio. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued Regis Corp. over the firing of two hair stylists at a SmartStyle location in a Wal-Mart in northeast Columbus. EEOC senior trial attorney Jeffrey Stern says the government found that salon management held a stereotypical view that black employees should do the hair of black customers.

Continental to cut flights

ERIE, Pa. — Continental Airlines will cut some flights at Erie International Airport in December and January because of high jet-fuel prices and a shortage of flight crews, but officials hope they will be restored sometime next year. Continental spokeswoman Mary Clark said the cutbacks in flights between Erie and Cleveland are temporary.

Christopher Rodgers, Erie International Airport’s director of strategic development, said Continental is switching from 19-passenger to 37-passenger turboprops and that has resulted in a lack of trained crews for those plans.
