November 19, 1982: A chemist who tested six school buildings in Salem for potential asbestos hazards says the fiber levels in the air are not currently dangerous, but he recommends several areas where asbestos insulation should be encapsulated, mostly at the high school.

 The Ohio Senate passes a tough new drunken driving law and sends it to Gov. James Rhodes for his signature. The law mandates jail time for first offenders.

Roy Rogers Jr., son of the western movie and singing star, marries Linda Yoder, 18, at the First Methodist Church in Middlefield. Young Rogers will resume working in his father-in-law’s construction business and his bride plans to attend business college in Warren.

St. Elizabeth Hospital has a new heart catherization system that uses a computer to tell within seconds whether a heart patient is sound enough for surgery.

The cost of preparations for the Fairyland Yule Parade that will open the Youngstown Christmas shopping season is estimated at $35,000, including the cost of stringing more than 7,000 lights  and decorations downtown to give Federal Street a festive air.

Mayor Frank X. Kryzan says Youngstown’s 1958 budget will be slightly higher than the $11.8 million, record appropriation for 1957. The 1957 budget was an increase of $440,000 over the expenditures for 1956.
