“Andrew Jackson” (8 p.m., History Channel): He can be found gracing the $20 bill. But viewed elsewhere, Andrew Jackson’s image remains problematic even after two centuries. So vehemently did he champion the cause of the common man that his political style was called “Jacksonian Democracy.” But his contempt for American Indians was such that he brutally displaced thousands of them, blazing the infamous “Trail of Tears.” And yet, as president, the man nicknamed “Old Hickory” paid off the national debt, took on corruption in Washington, D.C., and secured westward expansion. A man both lionized and damned, even today, he’s the subject of new documentary on the History Channel.

“2007 American Music Awards” (8 p.m., ABC): It’s said that everyone’s a critic, and this year, the American Music Awards lets the public assume the role with added influence. For the first time in the 35-year history of the show, fans were able to choose winners via online voting. Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Linkin Park and Daughtry received the most nominations, with three each. Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel again makes the jump to prime time to host the show. Alicia Keys, Avril Lavigne, Rihanna and Celine Dion are scheduled to perform.
