Youths to fix, deliver 250 turkey dinners
10 area churches are
involved in the community project.
YOUNGSTOWN — The Interdenominational Youth Coalition will participate in its fourth annual Thanksgiving Dinner project by preparing and delivering 250 dinners to area residents.
About 80 young people from 10 area churches will meet Wednesday at St. Charles Borromeo Church social hall in Boardman to prepare the traditional meal that includes turkey, stuffing, gravy, green beans, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, tossed salad, bread and butter and dessert.
Youths from Canfield United Methodist, Good Hope Lutheran, Greenford Lutheran, New Bethel Baptist, St. Brendan’s Catholic, St. Charles Catholic, St. Christine’s Catholic, St. James Episcopal, St. John’s Episcopal and St. Patrick’s Catholic churches are involved.
The youths and their leaders also have worked with their respective congregations to collect donations of the food and supplies necessary to prepare and deliver the meals.
After a brief mixer at 1 p.m., the young people, with the aid of adult volunteers, will volunteer their time to prepare the dinner and make table decorations to accompany the meals.
In addition to delivering the meals to individuals and families in the community this year, the coalition also will deliver meals to the Youngstown Greater Point daytime homeless shelter and to the Drop-In Center on the city’s North Side.
The coalition involves youths of many faiths in a community ministry. Participants range from ages 13 to 18.
Volunteer Services Agency Inc., 5500 Market St., sponsors the coalition. The agency works to mobilize and coordinate volunteer activity throughout the community to enhance the quality of life in the Mahoning Valley and provide resources and assistance where needed in order to create a spirit of good will and cooperation.
