DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS Comments on dinner

Among the dedicated volunteers Friday who served the Thanksgiving dinner at Price Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Youngstown were:

Louise Young, a 30-year church member who’s pitched in at the dinners for 15 years. “It’s spiritual and physical nourishment,” she said. “For some people, this is the only good meal they have during the week.”

Carol Donnelly, a church member for 60-plus years who has helped at the dinners from the start. “The church should be a place of outreach to the community,” she said. “It shows the church cares about people in the community. People not only get food, but benefit from the fellowship.”

James Cobbin, a church member since 1935 who has helped since the dinners began. “The fellowship is good. A lot of people need this program because times are kinda rough,” he said. “Single people and senior citizens really appreciate how it helps them out.”

Jo Lewis, a member since 1956 who has helped since the start of dinners. “It’s what a church should do to help meet people’s needs. It’s setting an example of helping people,” she said.

Donald Perry, a 45-year member; Edward Harris, a 14-year-member; and Willie Barron, a member since 1953, all said the project was a good outreach to help the community.

Herman “Pete” Starks, a 50-year member who’s been involved in the dinner some 20 years. “Helping someone as we travel along our way, our lives won’t be vain,” said the event’s unofficial maître d’, who directs people to their seats.
