NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The city school board will conduct a special meeting at noon Monday to consider renewing the district’s contracts with Superintendent George Gabriel and business manager Joseph Ambrosini. The meeting will be held in the Croton Avenue administration building. If their contracts are renewed Gabriel and Ambrosini will each be given a five-year extension, beginning July 1, and a $3,000 raise in the next school year. The move would bring Gabriel’s annual salary to $119,436 and Ambrosini’s to $87,190.

Traffic safety talk

NEW SPRINGFIELD — Susan Viarf of the Mahoning Safety Community will talk about traffic safety when the Springfield Township Crime Watch meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the township building, 3475 E. South Range Road. Township Police Officer Adam Treharne also will discuss the township’s crime statistics for the month. Refreshments will follow the discussion.

Trumbull road closings

WARREN — The Trumbull County Engineer’s Office reports that two roads will be closed Monday through Wednesday for crosspipe replacements. One closing affects Corey Hunt Road about 1,700 feet north of Bristol Champion Townline Road in Bristol Township. The detour includes Corey Hunt and Shaffer roads, state Route 45 and Bristol Champion Townline Road. The other area is Newton Falls-Tomlinson Road about 2,900 feet southeast of Selkirk-Bush Road in Newton Township. The detour involves Newton Falls-Tomlinson Road, state Route 534 and Carson-Salt Springs Road.

Leetonia leaf pickup

LEETONIA — The village will start picking up leaves with a leaf vacuum machine starting on the town’s south side Monday. There will be one pass on the south side then the machine will go to the north side. After the north side has been completed, there will be one final pass on both sides of town. The village will not pick up piles of mixed materials such as brush and leaves. Residents will be responsible for having mixed material piles removed at their own expense.

Man robbed in garage

BOARDMAN — A Grover Drive man told police he was robbed as he got out of his car at his home. The victim, 77, said that he pulled into his garage late Thursday and as he left his car, a man wearing a ski mask came into the garage demanding money and threatening to kill the victim. The victim said he didn’t have any money, and the masked man pepper sprayed him in the face and the two men struggled, a police report said. The robber grabbed the man’s wallet and cash from the victim’s pants pocket and fled on foot toward Maple Drive.

Guilty plea in sex assault

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — A city man pleaded guilty to aggravated indecent assault as part of a plea agreement after being arrested for sexually assaulting a 59-year-old woman. Shawn LaPenta, 34, of Highland Avenue will be sentenced after he is assessed by the Sexual Offenders’ Board of Assessment. A news release from the Lawrence County District Attorney’s office states LaPenta will be required to serve five to 10 years in state prison as part of the agreement. He also will undergo treatment for anger management. Police said the Highland Avenue woman was on the telephone with a friend when LaPenta forced his way into her home and attacked her physically and sexually. Police said the woman on the other end of the telephone conversation could hear the attack and contacted authorities.

Stabbed in parking lot

YOUNGSTOWN — A 27-year-old North Jackson woman told police she was stabbed Thursday afternoon near her right shoulder blade by a small, dirty middle-aged woman with missing teeth who wanted her car from the parking lot of the public library on Wick Avenue. She was able to push the woman away and drive herself to the hospital. A nurse at St. Elizabeth Health Center told police that the victim had a tube inserted because a lung collapsed. She was in fair condition on Friday.
