YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County grand jury indicted three men on murder charges in two separate slayings.

The grand jury also indicted one man on an attempted murder charge, and yet another man in a drugstore robbery that was followed by a police standoff.

Tora Barnette, of Upland Avenue, and Derrick Veal, of Hill Avenue, Toledo, both 19, were indicted Thursday on two counts of aggravated murder and one count of aggravated robbery with firearm specifications in the Nov. 4 death of David Clinkscale.

The first aggravated murder count alleges that Barnette and Veal killed Clinkscale with prior calculation and design, and the second alleges they purposely killed Clinkscale while committing aggravated robbery.

Clinkscale, 19, of Parkcliff Avenue, was shot in the back by more than one person in an Ohio Avenue apartment, police said.

Barnette and Veal were also indicted on a felonious-assault charge with a firearm specification, alleging an attack on Raymond Brooks, also Nov. 4. Initial police reports didn’t mention Brooks in the Ohio Avenue incident.

The other homicide indictment charges Lamar Hough, 20, of South Truesdale Avenue, with murder in the death of Elmer Antonio Avilez Landaverde, who was found in his Shehy Street yard after being shot Oct. 21.

Hough is also charged with two counts of aggravated robbery involving two other male victims, and with aggravated burglary at a Shehy Street house, all Oct. 21, and with improper discharge of a firearm at or into a habitation. Firearm specifications apply to all counts.

Kenneth Berch, 56, of Penn Avenue, was indicted on attempted-murder and felonious-assault charges with firearm specifications in the nonfatal shooting of Terry Marlowe, 43, of McGuffey Road, on Sept. 12.

Marlowe was critically wounded after being shot once in the leg and twice in the back with a .22-caliber handgun in Berch’s residence. Witnesses said the two men fought over crack cocaine Marlowe refused to share, and that Berch tried to hit Marlowe with a golf club and a machete before shooting him. Berch admitted shooting Marlowe after an argument, police said.

The grand jury also indicted Christopher R. Bosi, 32, of Cascade Drive, in the Oct. 21 robbery of the Walgreen’s on Tippecanoe Road in Cornersburg. The store clerk told police the robber lifted his sweat shirt and exposed a handgun tucked into his pants as he asked for all the $10 and $20 bills.

The partial license plate number a witness gave police led them to Bosi’s home, where a standoff with police ensued. Bosi was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center after telling police he had injected heroin and cocaine.
