Library, Butler to offer programs
YOUNGSTOWN — The Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County has joined with The Butler Institute of American Art to provide a free series of family programs that combine the organizations’ respective specialties, reading and art.
The next program is 1 p.m. Sunday at the art museum, 524 Wick Ave.
“The premise is to match art and literature in order to give families a bigger experience,” said children’s librarian ShariDellaPenna.
The series, “Imagine With Us: Stories and Art,” consists of programs that involve an art activity to help children recognize and create masterpieces, and a story time to help them become master readers.
A museum art educator and a children’s librarian will lead the activities.
Each program will tie the stories and art project together by centering them on one of the museum’s major exhibits or works.
The story time portion also will focus on one of the six pre-literacy skills that researchers have found necessary for proficient reading. The librarian will show parents how to incorporate the skill into their children’s daily routines.
The free series runs now through April and is open to families of children ages 12 and younger. Each program is at 1 p.m. on the third Sunday of the month at the art museum. There is no program in December. No registration is required.
