NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The New Castle Light Up Night parade will be at 7 p.m. Thursday downtown. The parade kicks off the holiday season with area high school bands, floats and a fireworks finale. The parade is sponsored by the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce.

Feed the Children

YOUNGSTOWN— The Mahoning County Salvation Army is accepting applications for the Feed the Children program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at The Salvation Army, 1501 Glenwood Ave. Food distribution will take place Nov. 20 at the same location. County residents with children and total household income 200 percent or less of the Federal Poverty Guidelines are eligible. Clients must register during the application period to receive food. Laundry worker robbed

YOUNGSTOWN — A robber wearing a purple hoodie and black ski mask robbed an employee at the Brite & White Laundromat on Mahoning Avenue of cash around 7:30 p.m. Monday. A police report on the heist made no mention of a weapon.

Child beaten

YOUNGSTOWN — An investigation launched after school officials took an interest in bruises seen on a 6-year-old boy at Taft Elementary led back to the boy’s mother, who witnesses told police hit him with a belt because he took a bag of cheese snacks from an older sister. Photos of bruises on the boy’s arms, chest, back and face were taken Monday at the school. Police learned that Mahoning County Children Services Board already has an open case on the boy’s mother. The report of the child’s injuries was turned over to the police department’s juvenile division.

Car fished from river

WAMPUM, Pa. — A car owned by two Sharpsville, Pa., residents was fished out of the Beaver River. Pennsylvania State Police said two men from Wampum were fishing in a small boat on the Beaver River off River Road on Monday. When they went to pull up their anchor, it would not come up. They found it was hooked to an automobile, police said. With the help of two fire departments and others, the 2007 Ford Focus owned by Casey and Nathan Melhorn was pulled from the river.

2 men arrested

WARREN — A 40-year-old man and his 22-year-old nephew were arrested in the vandalizing of Front Street Trucking on Austin Avenue. Frank Hilty of Niles and his nephew, Thomas Hilty of Warren, were found wearing dark clothing and lying in the brush behind the business about 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Police were called to the business after receiving a tip that two men were possibly breaking into the business. When police arrived, they found a large piece of metal tube on the ground and exposed, cut wire. The men also had tools to cut the wire, police said. They are charged with vandalism and possession of criminal tools and await a court hearing.

Bus windows broken

YOUNGSTOWN — A rock thrown at a city school bus traveling on Colfax Avenue on the South Side broke out a window Monday afternoon and a paint-ball gun was used to shoot out another window, reports show. The driver said teenage boys were responsible for the damage.
