Toledo C.C. wins Div. II volleyball


CVCA (18-1-3) won its
second state boys soccer title since 2004.

FAIRBORN — Toledo Central Catholic won the Division II girls state volleyball championship with a 3-0 win over Columbus Hartley at Wright State University on Saturday.

The Fighting Irish (26-4) rode 25-19, 26-24, 25-17 scores to win in the school’s first appearance in a state volleyball championship game. Central Catholic made the state semifinals in 1977 and 1995.

Hartley (25-5) was making its first-ever appearance in the state final four.

Division I

FAIRBORN — Cincinnati Mercy won the Division I girls state volleyball championship with a 3-2 win over Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame.

Mercy (29-1) lost the first and the third sets, but came back to take the final two from Mount Notre Dame (24-6). The game was a rematch of last year’s final, which was won by Mount Notre Dame.

The scoring in the third meeting of the season between the two schools was 16-25, 25-12, 26-28, 25-19, 15-11. The previous two games had also gone to five sets, with each school winning one apiece.

Division III

FAIRBORN — Lima Central Catholic won its first Division III girls state volleyball championship with a win over Albany Alexander.

The Thunderbirds (27-2) dropped the first set 25-27, then came back to win in straight sets 25-17, 25-15 and 25-20. It was the first state final appearance for Lima and Alexander (25-4).

Division IV

FAIRBORN — Maria Stein Marion Local won its first Division IV girls state volleyball championship with a 3-0 win over Norwalk St. Paul.

Norwalk St. Paul (26-4), the defending state champs, made it close in the second set, but Maria Stein Marion Local (29-1) squeaked that one out and while easily winning the first and third sets, scoring 25-14, 25-22, 25-16.

Marion’s only other appearance in the state finals was in 2002, when they lost to St. Paul.

Soccer

COLUMBUS — Danny Thompson scored both goals, helping Cuyahoga Falls Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy win 2-0 over Kettering Alter in the Division II boys state soccer championship.

It’s the second state title for CVCA (18-1-3) since 2004.

Thompson scored both goals in the second half. His first goal game directly from a corner kick, as he bent the ball from the left corner to sail it neatly into the goal. Kettering Alter goalkeeper Matt Dorrow got a hand on the ball but wasn’t able to hang on.

Thompson then took possession of a loose ball midfield and drove a low hard shot into the upper left corner to make the score 2-0 over Kettering Alter (18-3-2).

Shaker Hts. Hathaway Brown 2,
Hamilton Badin 0

COLUMBUS — Lani Smith had an assist and scored a second-half goal to seal Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown’s 2-0 win over Hamilton Badin in the Division II girls state soccer championship.

Smith led an offensive attack that outshot Badin 15-8 and kept defenders on their heels for most of the match.

Hathaway Brown’s first goal came in the 18th minute when Smith drove up the middle with the ball, then kicked it behind a defender into the box. Merrill Bachouros knocked it past the goalie from 16 yards out.

Smith’s goal came in the 69th minute when she stole the ball on the left wing, cut toward the center and then from the left side of the box made a low shot near the right post.
