YOUNGSTOWN — City police are investigating what appears to be the city’s latest homicide. According to police, a man in the 1300 block of Atkinson heard gunfire just before 10:45 p.m. Friday. A family member asked the man to go and investigate the noise. The man said he saw a body lying in the grass about two houses down. Police did not have an exact address. Police arrived on the scene and determined the man was dead. His name has not been released.

Fire at WCI Steel

WARREN — Firefighters from several area departments spent Friday evening battling a fire at WCI Steel on Pine Avenue. According to county emergency personnel, the fire started about 8:16 p.m. Firefighters from Howland, Lordstown and Warren were on scene fighting the fire as of 10:20 p.m. Friday. No fire department personnel were available to provide a cause or damage estimate for the fire.

West Side power outage

YOUNGSTOWN — Emergency crews were called to the scene of live wires down in the area of Vestal Road and Stephens Street on the West Side around 12:45 p.m. Friday. A crash caused a utility pole to fall, and police were summoned for traffic control. Power was out for about three hours for some West Side residents.

Domestic violence event

WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. — Denise Brown, sister of Nicole Brown Simpson, will be the featured speaker Tuesday at the 30th anniversary dinner for the Mercer County Center against Domestic and Sexual Violence. Brown has been a national advocate against domestic violence since the 1994 murder of her sister, the ex-wife of O.J. Simpson. The dinner will be at the Radisson Hotel and tickets to attend are $40 per person. Doors open at 6 p.m., dinner will be served at 7 p.m. and Brown will speak after dinner. School break-in

YOUNGSTOWN — Closets were discovered ransacked when police responded to a burglar alarm at Alpha School of Excellence around 11:40 p.m. Thursday. Officers said it’s likely the suspect entered through a second-floor window. The door window to a room on the second floor was broken to unlock the door. Any loss will be reported after an inventory.
