NHL ROUNDUP Thursday’s other games

Devils 4, Flyers 1

NEWARK, N.J. — Veteran Dainius Zubrus and rookie Rodney Pelley scored their first goals of the season in a three-goal flurry for New Jersey. Zubrus and Brian Gionta scored within 18 seconds of each other in the first period after spotting Philadelphia a 1-0 lead, and defenseman Karel Rachunek scored late in the period to give New Jersey a 3-1 lead. Pelley’s first NHL goal early in the second period sent Flyers goaltender Martin Biron to the bench. The last time the teams met on Oct. 18, Biron shut out the Devils 4-0. The struggling Devils entered the game having won just two of their last eight games, but found their offensive rhythm and equaled their combined goals for the last three games with Pelley’s score. Martin Brodeur was barely tested by the Flyers, who were outshot by the Devils 30-8 through the first two periods and 39-14 overall.

Mike Knuble scored for the Flyers, who played without left winger Simon Gagne, scratched after complaining of dizziness and headaches stemming from a hit by Pittsburgh’s Gary Roberts Wednesday night.

Lightning 5, Hurricanes 1

RALEIGH, N.C. — Shane O’Brien scored two goals to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to their first road victory. Vincent Lecavalier, Filip Kuba and Vaclav Prospal each scored for the Lightning, who were 0-7 away from home this season. Prospal and Michel Ouellet added two early assists as Tampa Bay won consecutive games following a six-game losing streak. Johan Holmqvist finished with 40 saves, including an impressive diving glove stop on Erik Cole’s short putaway during one of Carolina’s few power plays midway through the second period. Ray Whitney scored early in the third to break up Holmqvist’s shutout bid for Southeast Division-leading Carolina, which had little to feel good about after this one. The Hurricanes came in with the NHL’s top offense — tallying 58 goals and averaging 3.87 per contest — and ranked No. 2 on the power play, but struggled to get going as the Lightning scored two goals in both the first and second periods to turn this into a rout.

Capitals 4, Senators 1

OTTAWA — Viktor Kozlov had a goal and two assists in the second period and the Washington Capitals ended Ottawa’s team record eight-game winning streak. Olaf Kolzig made 27 saves for Washington, which had lost four in a row and 10 of its last 12 (1-11-1), including a 2-1 overtime loss Tuesday in Atlanta. Alexander Ovechkin scored his 10th goal with 3:45 left in the third to restore Washington’s three-goal lead after Kozlov, Nicklas Backstrom and Tomas Fleischman each scored in the second to put the Capitals up 3-0. Daniel Alfredsson scored his 11th goal late in the second for Ottawa, which lost for just the second time in 14 games (12-2-0). Ray Emery stopped 31 shots in his third start of the season for the Senators.

Canadiens 2, Bruins 1

BOSTON — Rookie Carey Price made 28 saves and Montreal beat Boston for a fifth straight time. Alex Kovalev and Tomas Plekanec scored for the Canadiens, whose line of Kovalev, Plekanec and Andrei Kastsitsyn combined for six points. Marco Sturm cut Montreal’s lead in half with 5:48 left in the second when he backhanded a shot past Price. Boston has dropped four straight and has scored only four goals in the last four games.
