Broken window gives Kelly Pavlik 20 stitches

YOUNGSTOWN — A little do-it -yourself home cleaning and repair has led to some nasty cuts and more than 20 stitches to the hands and arms of middleweight boxing champion Kelly Pavlik, but the injury will have no bearing on his upcoming rematch against Jermain Taylor in Nevada.

According to Debbie Pavlik, Kelly’s mother, the 25-year-old boxer was trying to repair and clean some old windows at his home in preparation for new windows to be installed when the accident took place.

“I told him that they are putting new windows in and he said that he would be embarrassed with [the installers] seeing bugs and stuff between the windows,” she said.

Debbie Pavlik said her son was lifting the window to clean and make some adjustments when the window crashed down and shattered on his hands and arms. He was later given a little more than 20 stitches to close the wounds resulting from the shattered glass.

Jack Loew, Pavlik’s trainer, said Pavlik is recovering fine and the injury will have no effect on the Taylor fight scheduled for Jan. 26 in Las Vegas. Training will begin in mid December as scheduled, Loew said.

Joe Schiavoni said the injury is relatively minor, but has been blown up to be more than it is with some news sources reporting incorrectly that the boxer received more than 100 stitches.
