Quaker Community Fire District to be dissolved

SALEM — The Quaker Community Fire District is one vote away from its end.

City council tonight gave legislation a second reading to dissolve the district. Three votes are needed to pass an ordinance.

The city and Perry Township agreed in 2005 to form the district to save money. The State Employment Relations Board ruled the city could not form the new entity while it had a binding contract with the city fire department. A judge also ruled the district could not begin operations

Councilman Earl A. Schory II, a lawyer, wanted to dissolve the district to prevent any legal problems in the future.
