Sharon goes with home rule

In Sharon, voters decided to change their form of government.

They agreed by a two-to-one margin to go with a home rule charter that will eliminate the elected posts of mayor, controller and treasurer in favor of an appointed city manager and financial officer.

“Our study commission is very gratified after 16 months of hard work, the citizens of Sharon would embrace our charter,” said William McConnell Jr., chairman of the study commission.

Mayor Bob Lucas, who was part of the “Vote No” effort, said he was surprised by the results.

“Two years ago I ran on the platform of change and I thought I was doing that,” he said.
