Stolen handgun used to kill officer

ARCADIA, Pa. (AP) — A handgun stolen in Indiana County was used in the May slaying of an Ohio police officer.

On Friday, police arrested 37-year-old Samual Smolk of Johnstown on a charge of breaking into an Arcadia home in September 2006.

Police say Smolk stole several arms, including a 9 mm Highpoint that was used May 25 to kill Cleveland Heights police officer Jason West. Police say Smolk sold the stolen weapons on the streets of Cleveland.

Police used a national database to link the stolen pistol to the Arcadia break-in and Smolk.

Twenty-seven-year-old Timothy Halton Jr. has been charged with killing West. The officer had gone to the suburban Cleveland neighborhood to quell a fight. West was shot in the face when he got out of his cruiser.
