Diabetes
An estimated 20.8 million Americans have diabetes. An estimated 6.2 million diabetes sufferers have never been diagnosed with the disease. More than 4,000 people are diagnosed with diabetes every day. Here are the most at-risk populations for the diabetes:
TYPE 1, JUVENILE-ONSET DIABETES
Those with a family history of the disease.
TYPE 2, ADULT-ONSET DIABETES
Those older than 45.
Those with a family history of the disease.
Overweight people.
People who do not exercise regularly.
People of African, Hispanic, Asian or American Indian descent.
Women who have had a baby weighing more than 9 pounds.
People who suffer from impaired glucose tolerance, low HDL cholesterol or high blood pressure.
Women who have experienced gestational diabetes.
