UNIVERSITY HTS. — Top-ranked Mount Union scored on its first six possessions and rolled over John Carroll 53-0 at Don Shula Stadium. The shutout was the Raiders’ (9-0, 8-0 Ohio Athletic Conference) fifth consecutive and sixth overall — tying their own Div. III record for shutouts (6) set in 2003. On the third play from scrimmage, Nate Kmic ran 35 yards for a score — that touchdown set a Raider record for career rushing touchdowns, 63. The previous mark of 62 was set by Chuck Moore (1998-01). The Raiders led 26-0 after one quarter and now after nine games have outscored their opponents 197-0 in the first quarter. Kmic ran 18 times for 98 yards. Kicker Mike Zimmerman set a new Div. III record for consecutive conversion kicks, 103. Pacing the Mount Union passing attack was Greg Micheli who hit on 19 of 25 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns. The Purple Raiders finished with 543 yards of total offense.
Walsh 54, Marian 28
CANTON — Walsh (4-6, 1-5 MSFA) snapped a five-game losing streak against Marian (1-8, 1-5 MSFA) in a Mid-States Football Association Mideast game at Fawcett Stadium. The Cavs close the season at home next Saturday (noon) against Taylor. Clinton Blossomgame rushed for a career-high 241 yards and scored two 1-yard touchdowns as Walsh scored in every quarter. Blossomgame has rushed for 1,266 yards on the season. Walsh led 17-0 after one period, and 27-0, before Marian scored late in the second quarter. Eric Buchanan also kicked three field goals (37, 45, 30) in the first half, as the Cavs led 37-14 at halftime. Buchanan ended the day with a career best four field goals, tying a Walsh record for a single game. Marc Pullen passed for 179 yards and two touchdowns. He hit John Rutan for 15 yards and a score, and Rob Lash for a 9-yard score. Pullen also scored on 9-yard run. Lash caught four passes for 87 yards, and Rutan three for 70 yards. Walsh totaled a season-high 607 yards of offense and a season-high 54 points.
Grove City 44, St. Vincent 0
GROVE CITY, Pa. — Brian Mercer rushed for a career-high 179 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead Grove City. Mercer had 24 carries, three touchdowns rushing and one receiving for Grove City (4-5), which was playing St. Vincent (0-9) for the first time since 1960 and tied a school record with 90 offensive plays. Grove City’s Andrew DiDonato was 19-for-27 for 241 yards and three touchdowns and became the school’s leader in career passing yards with 3,023. Ian Tobin caught seven passes for 75 yards to lead all receivers. Grove City’s defense limited St. Vincent to 127 yards of total offense, and four St. Vincent passers combined to go only 7-for-25 for 45 yards and an interception. Logan Small had 52 yards on 15 carries for St. Vincent, which was penalized for more yardage (199) than it gained.
Wittenberg 17, Allegheny 6
MEADVILLE, Pa. — Andy Vanover had 81 yards of offense and a touchdown and Rod Belcher scored on an 80-yard kickoff return as Wittenberg beat Allegheny. Vanover had 56 yards rushing and an 18-yard scoring reception and Aaron Huffman was 9-for-17 for 121 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions for Wittenberg (7-2, 5-1 North Coast Athletic Conference). Allegheny (5-4, 3-3) lost despite holding a 377-209 advantage in total yardage and getting 255 yards passing from T.J. Salopek, who was 26-for-43. But Allegheny was limited to four Josh Whiteside field goal attempts, only two of which — from 45 and 39 yards — were successful. After Whiteside kicked a 45-yard field goal less then 2 1/2 minutes into the contest, Belcher returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown and Wittenberg never trailed again.
Geneva 27, Waynesburg 17
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. — Gabe Gordon ran for a 5-yard touchdown in overtime to give Geneva the decision. Each team is now 7-2. In the first meeting between the two schools since 1991, Geneva took a 17-0 lead in the second quarter. Waynesburg scored all its points in the third quarter. The series dates to 1908. Gordon had just two carries for 5 yards in the contest.
Ohio Wesleyan 37, Hiram 7
HIRAM — Five players each scored one touchdown each as Ohio Wesleyan (4-5, 4-3) rode a balanced attack to the win. Ohio Wesleyan led 24-0 at the half and was in front 31-0 after three quarters. Zack Rojak ran 11 times for 56 yards and a 15-yard score, Kyle Green had six runs for 39 yards and Jerrell Cephas had three runs for 15 yards and a 1-yard touchdown for the winners. For Hiram (0-9, 0-6), Trevor Henderson completed 26 of 41 passes for 207 yards including a 5-yard touchdown pass to Mervyn Jones.
Carnegie Mellon 42, Bethany 19
BETHANY, W. Va. — Behind two 100-yard rushers, Carnegie Mellon rushed for 355 yards and four touchdowns to pull away. The Bison (4-5) had a two-game win streak snapped. The Tartans (5-4) scored first on a 66-yard, nine-play drive. Phil Pantalone heaved a 33-yard pass to Jeremy Doo for the score. The Bison closed to within a point when Milton Joyner threw a 16-yard scoring pass to Brad Zink. Travis Sivek rushed for a 3-yard score that gave the Tartans a 14-6 front and they seized control 21-6 when Jon Bodnar brought an interception back 40 yards. Carnegie Mellon extended its lead to 28-6 when Sivek scored a 20-yard rushing touchdown.
