Malone College inducts Streit as its 12th president
The new president has
already been on the job for four months.
CANTON — Malone College, a Christian liberal arts school, has inducted Dr. Gary W. Streit as its 12th president.
Inauguration ceremonies were Oct. 26 in the Johnson Center for Worship and the Fine Arts on campus, although Streit actually began his duties July 1.
Nearly 60 delegates representing colleges and learned societies across the country participated in the ceremony.
An anthem commissione d especially for the occasion was performed by the Malone College Chorale and the Symphonic Band.
Inauguration events started two days earlier with a pizza party for Malone students. It formally ended with the annual Presidential Dinner last Saturday.
Streit came to Malone from Olivet Nazarene University where he served in the positions of provost, chief academic officer and vice president for academic affairs.
The Winchester, Va., native earned an AB degree in English from Trevecca Nazarene University in Tennessee, a master’s in education-psychology from the University of Tennessee and a doctorate in English education from the University of Illinois.
He is married to Dr. Marla Streit, and they have one daughter.
In his inaugural address, Streit said Malone must continue to challenge students to consider their responsibilities in the world, not just to make a living but to make a life. A Malone education must be about the business of stifling indifference, and global literacy must become a recognizable objective for the Malone College experience, he said.
The college must foster a spirit of discovery and continue to prepare the next generation of well-equipped leaders, Streit said.
Malone, founded in Cleveland with just six students in 1892 by J. Walter and Emma Brown Malone, moved to Canton in 1957 and changed its name after changing its emphasis to Christian liberal arts. Today, Malone enrolls nearly 2,400 students in 49 undergraduate majors and five graduate degree programs. The college is affiliated with the Evangelical Friends Church-Eastern Region.
