High school students to learn more about business in YSU event
The large response last year resulted in two sessions planned this year.
YOUNGSTOWN — Some 800 students from 22 high schools across the tri-county area will have the opportunity to learn about their possible career path from people who live it.
The students will attend the Williamson College of Business Administration’s “Business 2020” from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University.
The program is sponsored by the FirstEnergy Foundation, which is partnering with Junior Achievement of the Mahoning Valley to provide educational material partnering and volunteer support.
The session begins at 9:15 a.m. with a welcome address from Dr. Betty Jo Licata, WCBA dean, followed by a keynote presentation at 9:20 a.m. by representatives from Turning Technologies.
Turning Technologies was named by Inc. Magazine as the fastest-growing privately held software company in the country, with a 3,907 percent increase in revenue over the previous three years. Turning Technologies has also been named the seventh-fastest-growing firm in the country by Entrepreneur Magazine.
Panel sessions, which run from 10 a.m. to noon, will be offered on financial literacy, careers in business and preparing for the job market. More than 35 area leaders from various segments of business will offer insight and information during the sessions.
Among the participating businesses are Humility of Mary Health Partners; Home Savings & Loan Co.; Hill, Barth, & King, LLC; Cintas Corp.; Cohen & Co.; First Place Bank; Packer Thomas; Butler Wick & Co.; and IRS Criminal Investigations.
More than 1,200 high school students from 25 local high schools participated in the 2007 Business 2020 programs, and, due to that overwhelming response, a second session of Business 2020 for high school students has been scheduled for Feb. 21, 2008.
