NHL ROUNDUP | Thursday’s games
Rangers 2, Capitals 0
NEW YORK — Chris Drury scored his first goal since opening night, and Henrik Lundqvist notched another shutout as the New York Rangers went on their first winning streak of the season. Lundqvist made 31 saves and has been a big reason why the punchless Rangers have had any success in the early going. He has allowed 20 goals in playing all 12 games and already has three shutouts this season, 10 in his three-year NHL career. New York (5-6-1) has won two straight and is 3-1 on its six-game homestand despite scoring a league-low 21 times during the young season.
Islanders 4, Lightning 0
UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Rick DiPietro turned aside 28 shots for his 12th career shutout and added an assist to help the Islanders. Bill Guerin, Josef Vasicek, Ruslan Fedotenko and Trent Hunter scored for the Islanders, who beat the Lighting for the first time in nine contests (0-5-3), dating back to a 3-0 win at home on March 21, 2004. The Lightning got 28 saves from Marc Denis. Tampa Bay is still winless on the road (0-6-0), and have allowed 28 goals away from home. Mike Sillinger, who played in his 1,000th NHL game, had an assist for the Islanders. DiPietro made the biggest save of the game nine minutes into the game when he gloved a rising wrist shot from in close by Jan Hlavac.
Bruins 4, Sabres 3, OT
BOSTON — Marco Sturm scored in overtime and added an assist to lead Boston. Sturm beat a distraught Ryan Miller and scored with 52.3 seconds remaining after he redirected a shot from Aaron Ward, who had gently flipped the puck toward the net. Tim Thomas made 27 saves for Boston, who beat the Sabres for the third time in its last 11 home games against Buffalo. Buffalo’s Paul Gaustad scored a power-play goal to tie the game at 3 when he tipped the puck out of the air after a pair of slick passes from Jaroslav Spacek and Ales Kotalik with 11:42 remaining in regulation.
Canadiens 5, Flyers 2
MONTREAL — Saku Koivu had a goal and an assist and Cristobal Huet stopped 16 shots to lead the Canadiens. Alex Kovalev and Tom Kostopoulos scored special-teams goals in the second period, and Guillaume Latendresse scored in the third on a fine pass by Koivu, who opened the scoring 8:53 in. Chris Higgins scored on a 5-on-3 at 16:42 of the third as Montreal remained undefeated through regulation in six games (5-0-1). Mike Richards and Scottie Upshall scored for Philadelphia, which lost for the third time in four games following a five-game winning streak.
Senators 6, Thrashers 4
OTTAWA — Randy Robitaille scored his first two goals for Ottawa before leaving with an injury. Robitaille, signed as a free agent earlier this season, scored twice to stake Ottawa to a 2-0 lead early in the second period, but was hit by Thrashers defenseman Garnet Exelby and didn’t return. A team spokesman said he suffered facial contusions and it wasn’t known if he would miss any more time.
