YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County grand jury has indicted a Crandall Avenue man in Saturday’s fatal shooting of a Canfield man.

Allen K. Frost, 37, was indicted Thursday on a murder charge with a firearm specification in the shooting of Gregory Sopher, 18, of South Raccoon Road, who was found dead in Frost’s living room with a .38-caliber gunshot wound to his head.

Frost told police he and Sopher were “getting high” and got into a fight over “losing a video game.” Frost also told police he had to shoot Sopher to “protect me and my family.”

But Frost’s girlfriend told police she heard Sopher accuse Frost of stealing his money, heard a single gunshot, and saw Frost with the gun and Sopher on the floor bleeding.

Also indicted were Hector Perez of Donation Street and William A. Freeman of Quinn Street, both 30, on an aggravated robbery charge with a firearm specification.

They are charged with trying to rob a Struthers man Oct. 2 in the 1600 block of Shehy Street. The victim told police he went to a Shehy Street apartment with Perez to drink beer.

After several hours, he went outside to sit in his car, and that’s when Perez and Freeman approached and tried to rob him, the victim told police. Perez fired a shotgun in the air, and Freeman waved a knife around, the victim said, adding that the shotgun broke off at the stock as he and Perez struggled over it.

Police, who arrested Perez at the scene, found under a mattress a shotgun that had been stolen in Beaver Township in August.
